Designer, systems-thinker, quiet perfectionist.

I'm Maya Okonkwo — the person behind Studio Mono. For ten years I've helped teams turn ambiguity into products that feel obvious.

My story

From a print desk to product teams.

I started in editorial design, setting type for magazines where every millimetre mattered. That obsession with grid, rhythm, and hierarchy never left — it just moved onto screens. Today I bring the same discipline to digital products, where clarity is the difference between a tool people tolerate and one they trust.

I've led design at two venture-backed startups, built design teams from the ground up, and shipped products used by millions. In 2015 I founded Studio Mono so I could work with a small number of clients at a time and stay close to the craft — no layers, no hand-offs, no diluted intent.

When I'm not designing, you'll find me letterpress printing, collecting Swiss travel posters, and over-analysing café menus.

What I believe

Principles that guide the work.

01

Clarity over cleverness

The best interface is the one nobody has to think about. I design for understanding first.

02

Systems, not screens

One-off screens age fast. I build languages and rules that scale long after launch.

03

Craft is non-negotiable

Spacing, weight, and rhythm aren't decoration — they're how trust is built, pixel by pixel.

04

Close to the work

I take few clients so I can stay hands-on from first sketch to final hand-off.

05

Honest, always

I'll tell you what the work needs, even when it's not what you hoped to hear.

06

Ship, then sharpen

Real products beat perfect prototypes. I design to learn, then iterate quickly.

Let's make something clear.

If you're building a product or brand that deserves real craft, I'd love to hear about it.
